Both the pioneers who first break the prairie sod for farming, as well as of the harsh but fertile land itself, feature in this American novel. The novel tells the stories of an orphaned boy from Virginia, Jim Burden, and the elder daughter in a family of Bohemian immigrants, ntonia Shimerda, who are each brought as children to be pioneers in Nebraska towards the end of the 19th century. It is the final book of her "prairie trilogy" of novels, preceded by O Pioneers! and The Song of the Lark. ![]() Willa Cather My Antonia 100th Anniversary Edition: Complete and Unabridged 1918 version with introduction, context, biography and analysisMy ntonia is a novel published in 1918 by American writer Willa Cather, considered one of her best works. ![]()

![]() ![]() For this, we can turn once again to George Orwell, the legendary British theorist who, more recently, has become a prop for diaper-wearing right-wing propagandists who looked him up on brainy quote dot com. Now that the President of the United States has embraced it as his own, it's worth digging into what the term "nationalist" actually means and the historical baggage it carries. In the context of a globalized, entirely interconnected world-a development Trump is powerless to reverse-it is fantasy. It's the kind of binary nonsense that authoritarian types feed on, an us-or-them formulation where the United States can succeed, or the wider world can succeed, but you can't have both. ![]() The juxtaposition here between "globalist" and "nationalist" is a Steve Bannon joint-a nice hat-tip to the guy on a day where he could be found playing a near-empty conference room on Staten Island. ![]() ![]() It was easy to follow, sometimes this switching between past and present becomes very confusing but not in this book. The book switches back and forth between the past and the present, giving the backstory to Rexley and his friends in short bursts which I liked. This is a coming-of-age Superhero story taking the whole teenage/young adult angst to a whole Rex fights murderous Mages, evil organisations, criminal mafias, his agency appointed psychiatrist, his own anxious brain, and the most frightening of all, his attraction to a certain blue-eyed superhero. He leaves home to become a member of the Secret Superhero Security team, alongside three of his friends and Danger City’s own superhero, Polaris. When Rex turns twenty, he feels the drive to use his scientifically given abilities to protect the world. ![]() When Rex was four years old, he became one of the world’s first superhumans. Who are you? And, more importantly, who could you be, if you were everything you could conceivably be? Polytheism into Monotheism, and the Emergence of the Virtuous Hero: Who You Could Be (II) Rule II: Imagine Who You Could Be, and Then Aim Single-Mindedly at That Who Are You-And Who Could You Be? People remain mentally healthy not merely because of the integrity of their own minds, but because they are constantly being reminded how to think, act, and speak by those around them. We need to talk about the nature of the present and our plans for the future, so we know where we are, where we are going, and why we are going there. We need to talk about the past, so we can distinguish the trivial, overblown concerns that otherwise plague our thoughts from the experiences that are truly important. We all need to think to keep things straight, but we mostly think by talking. People depend on constant communication with others to keep their minds organized. In the opening chapters he shows us: (1) a spy in the people’s army who thinks the leaders are mental, (2) a housewife who is scared for her husband’s health as he runs off to join the crowd, (3) a guard whose loyalty to the king doesn’t include wanting to get overrun, (4) a murderer who uses the uprising to answer an old grudge, (5) a young upper-class woman who doesn’t understand why she is suddenly the enemy, (6) a blind old lady with anger management issues, (7) soldiers who don’t want to kill civilians. This is not an epic battle between good and evil, nor a righteous quest for justice. For some of the main characters, this was all just thunder and lightning in the distance, but now the storm has arrived.īut this is revolution through the eyes of Abercrombie, and that means that any lofty ideal is regarded with scepticism. ![]() Throughout the Age of Madness trilogy, Abercrombie has been flirting with ideas about class revolution, and with The Wisdom of Crowds (2021), the revolution erupts in all its chaotic violence, spreading across the Union like an epidemic. I have loved most of Abercrombie’s books, but this was a disappointment for me. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Take a look at the beautiful moment a soldier returned home after three years to surprise his sister □Credit: Caters News Agency She is watching television in the living room.
